twin tribes is a dark synth duo based in brownsville, texas. formed by luis navarro (vocals, guitar, synths, drum machines) and joel niño, jr. yagyas rigning album from 2009 is the icelandic producer s most acclaimed dub, techno and minimal masterpiece. due to popular demand, delsin are now re-issuing it across three slabs of vinyl. previously only available as a double pack with eight tracks, the new re-mastered version features all 10 of the tracks from the original cd. gumundsson has been making music for years both solo and as part of the thule musik collective. he is an album specialist who has worked as yagya since 2002 and has put out six albums since then. they come on labels like force inc and sending orbs where rigning was first released and manage to be both absorbing and detailed yet suitable for relaxing background listening. his last two albums, sleepygirls (2014) and stars & dust (2016) appeared on delsin records. rigning is essentially one long track split into movements. it depicts a city sleeping as gentle rain falls and dubbed out grooves zone you out. yagyas style is always patient and slow burning, his grooves are long and drawn out and his pads reach up into the heavens. this whole album in coated in a warm fuzz and is a real comfort on dark, long, cold nights. as insular and melancholic as it is, there is also plenty of beauty in the melodies and delicate keys. from dark and gloomy to more optimistic and meditative, there is a sophistication throughout this always cinematic album that continues to make it stand out nearly a decade after it was first released.

norwegian duo ost & kjex make a welcome return to crosstown rebels. their private dancer ep is a masterclass in producing dance-floor ready rhythms. they welcome fellow norwegian whalesharkattacks to the mix to provide her dark yet dreamy vocals. we had a fascination with tinas private dancer since first being exposed to it by pat sharp on sky trax in the 80s. whalesharkattacks personifies everything thats cool about the 80s, so when we met her we knew we had to cut a version ost & kjex private dancer is as dark as it is melodic, with eerie drum pads and a medley of dreamt synths. norwegian vocalist whalesharkattacks, whose music has been described as 808 goth, lends a distorted vocal. on nightingale a burdenging bass adds a sense of urgency interlaced with vocals reminiscent of the 80s era. cosmic synths float side by side samples of beautiful bird song. a titillating work of art with a mesmerising beat.

lithuanian based label sodai started its journey in 2016, making it a label still in its infancy but making a big impression. owned by artist gardens of god, who started the label to create his own no limits platform for his experimental sounds and projects. while at the same time a platform to give other artists the chance to also have freedom with art and music. with releases from raxon, few nolder and alex krell under their belt, they can announce the exciting debut from uk producer third son this april. ive been an admirer of gardens of gods music for a long time, when he asked me if i could do something for his imprint, i was more than thrilled! adds joseph. syncopes synths spread far and wide, making this a journey of a track, modulating and panning in and out, pushing and pulling along a percussive drive. his broad musical range can be felt in this mix, with its slightly hypnotic tones. irony has a punctuated low end, which creates a deep and dark groove. the synthetic elements in this track gain in attitude, on top of ambient pads, leading nicely into bach to close out the release. its driving and determined bass makes the backbone of the track, with a modulating hook line, along building and expanding frequency ranges. the whole package makes for a very strong first release from third son, and sodai are excited to be welcoming him to the family.

icelandic techno veteran yagya enjoys a release on x/oz that celebrates both new and old material. the tempo is noticeably ramped up on -one weak light- but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious icelandic hue. -existence is weird- is no slouch either, but yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. -a very long daydream- is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while -getting closer to an unknown goal- sees the re-release of a track yagya released as rhythm of snow back in 1999.
